Good story with the emphasis on defeat and sorrow to letting go,forgiveness and wholeness. Good read, good developement of characters and plot.
I loved this book. It's not often a novel makes me cry, with this one I couldn' t stop crying, but laughing too.
Jewel the heroine has such a wry way of looking at the world that we can identify with her easily, yet she is full of love and does her best to cope like everyone else with some horrendous circumstances. Hers is compelling first-person narrative and the talented author gives her a very strong voice, part comedian part earth goddess, all woman.
Every character is a little jewel that sparkles, and the hunky heartthrob Malachi is even to melt your bones. The love secnes are wonderful--only wish there had been more!!
A beautifully written book-I couldn't put it down, raced to the end and then re-read the whole thing to really savor it. I will definitely be reading more by this fabulous author.
This book had me staying up until after 3 am to finish it. It brought back small town memories, it made me laugh and on did it make me cry. And, admit it, sometimes it is so good to crh!
Wow! This is a book I will long remember. I'm so excited to have found an author with such excellent writing skills. I will be reading many more of Barbara Samuels O'Neal's books because of her skill at creating incredible depth to each character and in her use of fresh, unique imagery in describing the settings. Many of her scenes evoked tears of laughter and tears of sadness. This is a definite keeper.
Loved this book so much. Every bit of the story was so rich, and Michael was the binding glue for me. Even when I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about all the characters. There were a few places in the book that I sobbed through. It doesn't happen very often that a book touches me so much. The best book I've read in quite a few years.
Compassionate and heartbreaking that brings each character to life and draws you in from the first page to the last page. I couldn't stop reading even though at times I had to set the book down to actually stop crying. This by far of all the books that I've read pulled me in and made me feel as if I was experiencing what each character was feeling. It's a must read if you believe in true friendship and family.
I save 5 stars for books by Diana Gabaldon. But this one moved me in similar ways and to similar depths. Family scenes and relationships are drawn with such tender insight that you recognize your own. Small-town rituals, and the vividness of the heat in southern Colorado, and the humid banks of the big river... I hated to leave when the book was over.
And I loved Michael as intensely as Jewel did, by the time we had to part. The ending is perfect.
