If I could give this 100 stars, I would. This is my all time favorite book, and I've been an avid reader since I was a kid. I was delighted to find that this is finally available on kindle, because my paperback version is quite literally falling apart. This story has it all - history, great character development, romance, and writing so descriptive that I almost feel as if I've seen India with my own eyes. The historical aspect of this book covers the time when England ruled India through the John Company, and leads up to and describes in frightening detail the revolt of much of India against the British rule. You will genuinely learn a lot about this period of time. The romance is impeccably developed, slow paced and nuanced. If you are a fan of romantic comedies, then this is not the book for you, because you won't find witty repartee, graphic love scenes or hilarious predicaments. It's a serious book with earnest characters and not much levity. This is my 4th time reading this book in the 30+ years since I discovered it, and I find that I take away something different each time. What remains the same is my adoration for the characters and their story, and the high bar it sets for all other books. And my sadness every time I finish the last page.

Enchanting! Delightful! Epic! M. M. Kaye does it again. A tale of the British in India during the Mutiny the blindness of commanding officer, the conflict of heart for those torn apart by blood, and the wrenching story of longing and hoping for love and safety. A bit faster paced than The Far Pavilions, which I think adds to the adventure and rapture while reading the book. The historical setting gives this book more substance than Trade Winds. A must read - especially for M. M. Kaye fans!
This book is one of my all time favorites. I love the rich history of India at this period of time. Kaye has done her research, she also lived in India and loved it and you can feel it in her work. I loved Winter and Alex. I have been reading this book twice a year since 1982. I also loved MM Kaye's Far Pavilions and Trade Winds. I have them and re-read them from time to time, but Shadow of the Moon remains my favorite.
The story of the 1857 uprising has been one I have read about a number of times, and this book does a wonderful job at portraying it. It is an amazing and horrifying stroy.So I knew the historical account when I started this book. The story of Winter and her ancestors is both interesting and unexpected in that it is a combination of nationalities and circumstances I found very interesting. I was also compelled to read the story of the siege from the city of Luknow as seen by the indian population. I think I would have foung this a fascinating book if it weren't for the fact that I could not become attatched to the characters. I found myself unable to relate to either Winter or Alex.I found her silly and him selfish, and a good part of the story almost morbid.
I am biased, though. My favourite book of all times happens to take on the same period, but seen from the point of view of an engsh visitor in India who happens to have to endure the siege at the residency. In the case of Zemindar, by Valerie Fitzgerald, the characters are
unforgettable.
This is a seriosly good book, mind you, but I by far prefer Zamindar, unfair as it is to compare. You be the judge...
One of my all time favorite reads as well as favorite author. The story is totally engrossing every time I read it and that is every few years. I find the India she talks about fascinating, the British to be insanely arrogant, and the loyalty of some of the Indians to the British amazing and heartwarming. Of course it is difficult not to love a child you raise. The entire mixture of people, religions and races live side by side and often form abiding deep friendships, yet hate can overcome everything. Winter and Alex are intensely likable heroes despite their blindness to their feelings for each other.
Of course if they loved at first sight there would be no story, just a history.
Love love love and recommend this book as well as M M Kay's other sagas and light mysteries.
How about some Audio versions with perhaps Davina porter to read it!
It's a love story (as it was featured).... but boy, it's so much more than that!

The love story appears more like a background story, perhaps a reason to tell the more dominant story of India in the 19th century. It beautifully describes the people from various backgrounds and religions that dominated that time; it describes the landscape, the way of living and thinking that doesn't only apply to a long gone world but to today's world as well.

There is insight and wisdom aplenty that will provide lots of life lessons and quotes and bring us one step closer to accepting what's different and difficult to understand.

The book has 600+ pages and the hero and heroine don't find each other until the last few chapters and even then this fact is rather insignificant compared to other events happening at the same time. Don't get discouraged, though! It's not by any means boring!

It's going to enrich your life and broaden your knowledge and horizon. Read it!
If you liked The Far Pavilions, you will enjoy this book as well. It really is a precursor to the Pavilions book, as it covers extensively the Indian Mutiny, which had taken place just as The Far Pavilions began. I was interested in Anglo/Indian history, and this is a painless way of learning some of the history of the English in India. I was interested and involved in the story of the young heroine and her dashing hero -- stayed up late three nights in a row in order to finish it. Considering that some chapters of this book describe the Indian Mutiny of 1857, it does have some violence. I believe the author uses the love story as a vehicle to convey the history of that time. Highly recommended, both for the history and the romance.
