I love books with a strong sense of place, and, as the title Stronger Than Mountains suggests, place is more than just a backdrop in this story of love and the struggle within, the timelessness of fighting for something worthy of all your strength and courage. You can get the story synopsis elsewhere on this page, and it's a good, engrossing tale, but mostly I was inspired by the hardworking character's faith to press on with hardships on every side, They are learning, just as families are today, how to love in the midst of the hardest trials, forging an ever-stronger bond and stronger community. Lynn Dean has written another novel that made me deeply care what happens to the people who lived and worked, loved and cried and laughed and prayed in this beautiful place and time. Stronger Than Mountains has very relatable characters in relatable situations, where they face challenges and have to face the decision of humbling themselves and working with others or assuming they can pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Overall a very fun story with a great underlying message of strength in unity.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys books that have depth, humor and development. This is quality historical fiction. I so look forward to book three!!!
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. There are so many aspects of this book to love. They is the historical background to make it interesting with flawed characters to cheer for as they make their mistakes. So worth your time.
This was such a great book, that I immediately had to read the author's first book. Left me wanting more. The book is a combination of carefully researched historical perspective with an understanding of human nature, and how practicing God's instructions can get people through anything.
Stronger than Mountains is the second in the Sangre de Cristo series and continues the saga started in Book 1, More Precious than Gold. What an amazing, historically accurate, and inspirational story. The characters will remind you of someone in your life and the struggles you will recognize as they are "common to man". But it does not stop there. If you have ever been to the Red River area, you will find it geographically accurate as well. The growth of each character will open your eyes to the potential growth we all can attain when we are willing to humble ourselves and consider another person's perspective. I highly recommend this book to be on your nightstand along with its predecessor, More Precious than Gold. The author, Lynn Dean, tells the story in such a way that it resonates with my heart and challenges my mind. Her understanding of relationships is rich and enlightening. Fantastic!!!!
I stayed up late last night to finish Lynn Dean's Stronger Than Mountains, a western historical that's wild west adventure, women's fiction, and a family coming-of-age story all wrapped in one.
It is the story of a man and a woman whose years of marriage and struggle to raise a passel of children in a hard but beautiful land has run them dry. Despite the dreams they began with, they've begun to live separate lives, unsure how to salvage their love and the hope for the future they once had. Meanwhile, there are obstacles to saving their family and their ranch -- big ones -- from floods and food shortage, to a desperate cattle drive, ambushing thieves, a difficult pregnancy, and a land war. Zeke and Millie are dealing with all these while trying to raise a daughter who is growing fast, and three restless boys who are each trying to make the sometimes risky leap across the chasm to manhood. Against this ever-increasing mountain of hardships, Zeke and Millie struggle to make sense of their lives and the love that once bound them together.
I admire Ms. Dean's writing style a great deal. By chapter two I was holding my breath, and when one of their sons did what he did (no spoilers!) my eyes got all misty. (Let it be known that I'm a hard case. Fiction doesn't get to me that easily.) Ms. Dean tells a story with beauty, depth, and authenticity. If you are married, you'll relate to her characters' troubles and striving in one way or another. As a parent, you'll be touched and encouraged, and you won't soon forget this moving and insightful tale.
Life and even love was hard for settlers in the Sangcre de Christo mountains in northern New Mexico. Everything a man had built could be wiped out in minutes when the weather turned vicious. Work was constant and left little time for fun and frivolity. Women heavy with child continued with their daily chores up until delivery. Men, born and bred to be tough had difficulty showing their women their soft side which often led to misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and disagreements. Friendships were cherished and were often all that kept families together after tragedy. Stronger Than Mountains is a touching story filled with faith and hope. I highly recommend it.
