Before purchasing this training log, I'd been keeping track of my workouts in an Excel spreadsheet. That worked for a while, but eventually I had some issues keeping it up to date and it wasn't always available where I wanted it to be. Using a pen-and-paper log has been a lot easier and more satisfying for me.
The 5/3/1 section in the back of this log makes it easy to track my progress on the main lifts. The benchmark workout section is also really handy for tracking both traditional crossfit benchmark workouts and progress on other exercises (like power clean or overhead squat.) I haven't used the block and cycle planning pages yet, but they look like they could be useful if you've got a big competition coming up. I look forward to purchasing another one after I fill up my current book.
Strength training these days is time after time complicated by fancy programs that claim to make people strong. I have been "under the bar"(in reference to lifting weights) since the age of 13, an athlete since before I could walk. I have come across many training logs and programs, and only in brief instances have I found what is found here. Duncan has made the progression of one's training easy both to follow and plan. It is always imperative that those in the iron game remember there are no secrets to strength training, and this log proves this. Work hard, lift heavy, and rest enough. I ramble gladly on this subject. It is a worthy investment for anyone, from weekend warrior to elite athlete, so do not hesitate on your purchase
How many training logs ask you to consider your recovery as a part of your training regimen? Duncan Sailors' Training Log does that and much more.
Anyone who has done CrossFit or CF style training knows that its "Constantly Changing" workouts make it hard to log them. Sailors' open and simple format solves this perfectly. Especially useful for all serious Crossfitters is the section that lets you track your times on "named" benchmarks workouts.
In addition to these sections, for me personally, the 5-3-1 section makes it very easy to track my 5-3-1 workouts. I have tried a couple different times to follow Joe Wendler's program and have always been frustrated trying to remember the various percentages and the formulas. Sailors' straightforward simple pages have made me confident that I will keep up with the program and help me reach my long-term goals.
I do multiple varied workouts daily at the box where I WOD. Standard CrossFit WODs, Mobility WODs, Olympic Weightlifting WODs, along with Wendler's 5-3-1 program. I often do 10 or more workouts in a week. I would worry about my recovery, I do worry about my recovery, and Sailors' book has a section that lets me objectively track my daily recovery activities.
I cannot say enough good about Training Log by Duncan Sailors. Try it! At 18 bucks its a cheap experiment. You won't regret it.
I was so excited to find this book. I had been crossfitting for over a year and using the 5/3/1 program for a couple months when I finally picked one up and it has been so helpful! Previously I kept track of my workouts and PR's on the box of my Olympic weightlifting shoes and random scraps of paper. The perfectionist in me wanted to be more organized with my training but I just wasn't sure where to start and therefore didn't. Ducan's book was a godsend. It has several key features that make it superior to all the other training logs available and was just what I would have created for myself if I had unlimited time and more training experience. So here are the features I find ultra valuable
1. Time Management
Your year gets broken down into Blocks, Cycles and finally week by week.
2. Measuring your Recovery
You got no sleep last night, drank no water and packed cupcakes for lunch? Then you didn't perform as well in your work out as usual. Hmmm, very interesting. The daily recovery factor tool is measured numerically which is absolutely genius and can help you notice patterns. (Hard to explain but very easy to use!)
3. 5/3/1 Template
This is a new method of weight lifting that you may have heard of but don't quite understand. Here is where you "find your numbers." It has been very effective for me. I used to lift what felt kind of hard for 5 sets of 5 reps or similar. Now I have specific weights to hit for each lift, each week. My max deadlift has gone from 90kg to 117kg, military press and backsquat have similarly improved and I have not stalled out yet.
4. Bench Mark/Personal Record Tracker
This is ESSENTIAL for beginners and experienced athletes. If I could do one thing over it would be to have had this tool when I first started Crossfit. It is so amazing to see how fast and far you progress, I wish I would have documented it! Anyway time for a personal example. This week I came into the gym and saw the WOD was a 2km row. I was feeling kinda tired and thought there wasn't much chance that I could make the Level 2 (850) time but I looked in my notebook to see what I had done in the past. I realized that I had easily done that before and decided to give it my best. I ended up with a new PR! Had I not known my previous time, I am sure I would not have felt the motivation to push myself on a downer day. I left the gym that day no longer tired but thrilled and proud.
5. Levels
Wonder how you stack up? In the back of the book are four lists of accomplishments for well rounded beginner, intermediate athlete, advanced athlete and the mythical Elite level 4. Sometimes "fitness" can seem like a meaningless word and an even more meaningless goal, this tool helps you think logically about where you are at and what you are aiming for.
In short Buy it! Buy it now and use it! Stay engaged and benefit more from your time in the gym with this easy to use training tool.

Overall it is great, it could be even better if it allowed space for a Warm-up section and a Mobility section.
This log is perfect for tracking workouts, progress, lift numbers, and recovery. The only downside is that has a book binding and not a spiral. I took mine to Office Max and had them chop off the spine and add a spiral for $3.50, so it wasn't that bad.
