Solid YA contemporary romance/coming of age. I really loved Sophie Jordan's Reign of Shadows duology so I was excited for another YA book. This book has relatable characters and is easy to read.

The Me I Meant to Be Sophie Jordan Books Reviews

At one point in the story, one of the characters references CW TV shows, and that’s what this book feels like—an extended episode of a CW teen drama.

It’s got a lot of the elements of one of those shows. Willa is a quiet wallflower who’s secretly in love with her friend Zach, a popular football player who’s literally the boy next door. Even if he was interested in her, Willa can’t have Zach, because he’s her best friend Flor’s ex. Flor is a poor little rich girl, abandoned by her mother and neglected by her father in favor of his hot young girlfriend. Flor wants Zach back, at least until she starts to work with her new math tutor, Grayson, one of the smart kids who flies under the radar at school. Grayson may not be popular, but he’s kind of hot, which Flor realizes as she starts to get to know him.

You can probably guess how the story turns out just from those descriptions. The author does try to move beyond clichés. Flor’s a soccer player rather than a cheerleader, for example. The two characters who seem like villains turn out not to be. (Although to achieve that, one of them does a complete 180 in terms of behavior that just comes out of nowhere, which really didn’t work for me.) Probably the biggest surprise is the way Grayson earns money in addition to tutoring. It’s highly improbable but would be an excellent excuse to get his shirt off if this actually was a CW show.

If you are a fan of teen dramas, you’ll probably like this book. For me, it was just an OK read.

Oh! Matters of the heart can be so complicated, especially when your heart is being torn in two. Willa's two best friends had dated, unsuccessfully, and though, in her mind, she knew she shouldn't want more with Zach, her heart wouldn't listen.

• Pro This story kept me in its clutches! I had to keep reading, because I was just too invested in the outcome to stop.

• Pro Jordan created some amazing chemistry between Flor & Grayson and Willa & Zach. There was no doubt in my mind that these two couples should happen, and I was shipping them both immediately.

• Pro The heroes were both fabulous, but Zach really, really won my heart. The whole boy-next-door-bestie-to-more thing was totally working for me. At first, I just thought he was a really smooth talker, but then I realized how he was simply speaking openly and honestly from his heart. I loved the way he just put it all out there. There were swoons.

• Con Although I was not disappointed in the ending, I would have liked a little more time dedicated to that resolution.

• Pro Flor and Willa each had some family issues they were dealing with, but Flor's really broke my heart. I wanted to just go and mom hard on her, because her parents were the actual worst. The fact that I cared so much for her can be attributed to how well Jordan crafted these characters.

• Pro It may not have been under the best circumstances, but I sort of cheered when Willa finally stopped pretending and started being honest. She never wanted to make waves or cause any drama, and by avoiding these things, she kind robbed herself of some happiness. It was nice to see her go and grab something for herself, while still considering how it affected those around her. I also liked her realizing that she wasn't inferior to Flor, that she was desirable and worthy of attention.

• Pro Though Willa and Flor's friendship was tested by all the secrets they were keeping, I never doubted their love for one another, and I kept hoping they each could have everything they wanted without having to sacrifice each other.

Overall A fun twofer romance, which had me flipping the pages and grinning from ear-to-ear.
As soon as I heard about this book, I knew I had to read it. I have been a fan of the author, Sophie Jordan, for a long time, ever since I read her book, Uninvited. I've read several other books by her since then, but this was the first YA from her in awhile it seemed. While visiting the different publisher booths at ALA last summer, when I saw this one I immediately had to ask if they had a copy I could read. It was one of my unicorn ARCs that I was very happy to take home with me from New Orleans last June. I didn't get to it as soon as I'd hoped, before release date last week. But, I was lucky enough that when I did get to it, January 3rd, I had nothing else I had to do that day, and was able to basically just sit and read almost all day long. Which I did, and I finished it in one day. I could barely put it down to do anything else. The characters were perfect, so realistic in my opinion. And so much about the story itself. There was the usual slut-shaming that you see in real life, but what I liked is that the girls, well, Willa at least - especially, called people out about it. Something that needs to be done. But it wasn't all just about the romance. There were friendships to keep up with, both between the girls, Willa and Flor, and then also between Willa and Zach, Flor's ex, but one of Willa's best friends for longer than that. And it wasn't like their home lives were perfect. Flor had issues with her dad and his new girlfriend. Willa was dealing with her older sister who had moved home with a baby and major depression. Then there was a surprise about Flor's tutor towards the end that I didn't see coming. Some hints about his home life had played out on one of their study sessions, and it totally did not go where I was assuming it would go. A great, emotional read, highly recommended, and one I'll definitely be purchasing for my school library in the future.
