Book was moderately well written, but the author likes to be in your face with his political and social beliefs. I thought the main character with autism was interesting, but as soon as the author blamed the autism on vaccines, and referred to vaccination as a "big pharma plot" he totally lost my interest. If this sounds like a book you'd still want to read, by all means give it a try, but after a while it just got to be too much for me...Tags : Happy Doomsday: A Novel - Kindle edition by David Sosnowski. Happy Doomsday A Novel edition by David Sosnowski Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is your basic doomsday story, told from the POV of a few select survivors. One of the characters has Asperger's syndrome, and the book strongly implies that this is due to his being vaccinated as a child. That's both bad science, and a bad message. The books also tells us that the 99.999% of earth's inhabitants that didn't survive all died simultaneously, and the few survivors we're tracking all believe it's because President Trump (the orange haired President; they don't mention Trump by name) probably hit a button somewhere and said "wonder what this one does." Really? You have to add a slam at the President? I would have liked some explanation of what caused the death of billions, but this is never discussed. Just the idea that everyone, everywhere dies at the exact same moment in time is ludicrous, and not integral to the story. Clearly a miss by the author.
I think the concept of this novel is a good one because the author covers certain things that most apocalyptic books brush over or simply ignore (i.e. where do all the bodies go; who in the post-a world is keeping those lawns mowed; and other little things like that). Also, the "who" survived was an interesting one, though it was never really explained why other than the one common thread they shared. That's the good.
Possible Spoiler Alert Ahead
What I wish I knew ahead of time was the amount of animal killing that occurred. And I don't mean for eating. You've heard of gratuitous sex scenes perhaps? I truly felt like there were more than a few gratuitous pet killings. The first time it occurred, I was taken aback, and I thought, "Okay. I don't really like that; don't feel it was necessary, but..." And then it occurred again and again. Enough that I almost stopped reading.
I noticed (after I read the book) other readers were bothered by the not-so-subtle "political" and regligious comments, and they were definitely there, but they didn't really bother me, and in a way, I think they did add something to the story.
I wavered on whether or not to write a review, but in the end, decided some readers might want to be warned of the animal killings. (For the record, I do believe some of that was necessary for the storyline to be realistic, as far as a post-apocalyptic story can be...It was just more than I could personally stomach.)
I think most readers, once they've started this story, despite the misgivings they may have, are going to want to finish, if for no other reason than to see what happens to the three main characters.
Chose this for free as one of the monthly first reads options. As echoed by other reviewers this would have been better without so much unnecessary, ham handed political claptrap. When I read for enjoyment, it's to escape the everyday garbage that gets spewed from all sides; no escape here. Characters had so many stereotypes attached to them that it was hard for me to like them. Kind of reminded me of a novelization of the History channel's fake documentary of a world after people.
Edit After thinking it over some more, 2 stars is being generous. Take every stereotype from The Breakfast Club (without any charm) and make three characters act out all the parts and give them the survival skill sets of Bear Grylls and Survivor Man and the strength of Arnold Schwarzenegger and you'll get an idea of how much you'll have to suspend your disbelief for this story. It's not humorous, just sarcastic. There's no coming of age....that was all done right before whatever it was that caused this apocalypse. Going to read something by Jeff Strand or JA Konrath to get my twisted humor fix.
I couldn't enjoy this book as much as I'd hoped from the blurb. The character Dev was the bright spot for me, and his storyline pushed me to actually finish the book instead of abandoning it, as I was tempted to do. I could really have done without the continual snide remarks by the author about Republicans, pro-life adherents (the phrase "clump of cells" was used multiple times), belief in God, etc. Oh! And the cause of Doomsday was never explained; perhaps a certain orange-faced person in power hit the wrong button instead of his Tweet ( those are the types of non-subtle phrases used by the author). If those things don't bother you, adjust my rating up a star. It's just not how I like my leisure reading.
This was... bloody awful. Literally. The most unlikable characters in the world, plus incredible amounts of animal cruelty and gratuitous violence, equals one of the worst things I've ever read.
